What is Melasma?
A pigmentation disorder of the skin that causes hyperpigmented dark spots on the face, is know as Melasma. Sun exposure is one of the major reasons of melasma. Other reasons are hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, birth control pills etc. Due to these reasons a person can suffer from disturbing skin conditions.
In Melasma, the pigmentation appears in one of three patterns.
- The central facial pattern involving the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin.
- The malar pattern which involves the cheeks and nose.
- The mandibular pattern which includes the jaw area.
A very few times melasma can also affect forearms.
